Celebrating Fall Planting Success!

We had a whopping 14 plantings this fall.  Heartfelt thanks to all of our partners and volunteers who planted with us!  We planted 3,460 sugar pines and 2,220 Jeffrey pines on approximately 114 acres.  That brings our total trees planted around the Tahoe since 2004 up to 117,933!

Saturday, November 23rd 10am – 12pm
Come plant sugar pines along the stunningly gorgeous "Impossible Trail" from Incline Village to Sand Harbor!  As always, we provide seedlings, planting instruction, shovels and gloves.  Please bring your own snacks, water, layers, sunscreen and appropriate footwear.  Meet at the East Shore trail sign near the Tunnel Creek Cafe.

#GivingTuesday is December 3rd!

GivingTuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. To raise awareness of charitable causes and amplify donors’ generosity, Facebook and PayPal will match eligible donations made on Facebook up to $7 million on December 3rd.  Matching starts at 8am EST, or 5am PST.

Spotlight on Bill Kelly

This season, we had the pleasure of planting sugar pines at Bill Kelly's family property in Glenshire, outside of Truckee.  Bill is a forward-thinking, values-based businessman and community member dedicated to making the Reno-Tahoe region a healthier, sustainable place to live and work.  Although not originally from Truckee - he hails from rural Ohio - Bill has lived in Truckee for 20 years and he has been actively working to make his community a better place in many ways.

Bill is well known around Reno-Tahoe for his successful business, Kelly Brothers Painting, Inc.  The business is founded on the principles of reliability, quality, attention to detail and customer satisfaction.  Bill nurtures a family-like relationship with customers and clients to build trust and loyalty.  He is also half-owner of the Reno-based company Simple Power Solar.  Facilitating clean energy in our sun-drenched region is yet another way to make the future cleaner and brighter, of course.

Bill is more than just a good businessman, however.  A passion for healthy living through eating healthy food inspired Bill to co-found the Tahoe Food Hub, a 501(c)-3, non-profit organization dedicated to building a regional, sustainable and equitable food system for the greater Tahoe area.  The Tahoe Food Hub helps create access to local, sustainably farmed food.  Food Hub farms and ranches practice regenerative agriculture, are small, and are within 150 miles of North Lake Tahoe.  The Food Hub increases food security in the area by bringing these small farmers' nutritious offerings to market.  Their fair trade marketplace makes it easy for restaurants, small grocers, resorts, schools and the public to access these local food producers.

The Tahoe Food Hub also showcases and teaches people how to harness Tahoe's 280+ days of sunlight and use 4-season growing techniques to grow food locally in their Growing Dome on Bill's family's property in Glenshire.  Luckily for us, as part of our morning of planting, Bill gave us a personal tour around the wondrous dome.  The geodesic dome is bursting with fresh fruits and vegetables - kale, carrots, greens, tomatoes - and even a fig tree, which was dripping with ripe figs when we visited in early November.  Bill built the Growing Dome to demonstrate that you can successfully grow food in the mountains.  We were sufficiently convinced.

Hopefully, the 50+ sugar pine seedlings that we planted nearby on the property will also thrive!  We applaud Bill's visionary efforts to restore sugar pines on his property and to improve and inspire better health, food and energy security in his community.  We hope that all of his projects flourish and make the Truckee-Tahoe region a better home for all in the long term.
